For Bible and church-history nights
Bible party games for the whole room
Quiz nights and party games about the Bible and church history. One person is the host: they open the game on a laptop, or cast a Chrome tab to the TV. Everyone else plays on their own phone.
- One host, many players
- Players join free
How it works
Three steps up
-
The host opens the game
Go to play.gatherupstairs.com on a laptop. To use the TV, connect the laptop with an HDMI cable, or cast the Chrome tab to the TV. A room code and a QR code appear. Nothing to download: it runs in your web browser.
-
Everyone joins on their phone
Point your phone's camera at the QR code, or open gatherupstairs.com/join and type the 4-letter code.
-
Pick a name and a character, and play
The TV shows the questions, and your phone is your buttons. The first person to join can also run the night from their phone.
The door is already open. Come on up.
Game nights
A whole night, one scoreboard
Line up a few games for the evening, play in teams if you like, and bring in friends from another home on their own screen.
-
Line up the night
Choose the games and their order. Between games, a short screen shows what's next. One scoreboard adds up the whole night, and every game counts the same.
-
Play in teams
Two to four teams: Lanterns, Scrolls, Nets and Sheaves. The host can split everyone into even teams with one tap, or choose them. A team's score is its players' average, so a smaller team isn't at a disadvantage. Teams come with the Church & Team plan.
-
Across homes
Family in another home open the game with your room code on their own laptop, or cast a Chrome tab to their TV, and play on their phones. Everyone sees the same question at the same moment. Slow Wi-Fi doesn't cost anyone points.
-
A guide on screen
Balaam's donkey guides the night: she shows you how to play, has a word as the scores come up, and cheers the winners.
Have a go
Your phone is your buttons
Try a question from the Upper Room Quiz: tap an answer. At a game night the question shows on the TV and the answers on your phone, and the quickest right answers score the most.
Upper Room Quiz
What did God create on the first day?
The answer:
The games
Pick a game. Play it together.
Tap a poster to see what each game is about. New games arrive as they're ready, and you can vote from your phone for the games you'd like us to make next.
The players
Pick a character when you join
Twelve to choose from, animals and things from the Bible's stories.
Questions
Before your first night
What do I need?
The host needs a laptop with an internet connection. Everyone else needs a phone. A TV is optional. Nothing to download: it runs in your web browser. On a laptop, Chrome or Edge can also install it as an app if you like.
Do I need a smart TV?
No. Any TV with an HDMI socket works with a cable from the laptop. If the TV has Chromecast, you can also cast a Chrome tab to the TV. For a small group, the laptop's own screen is enough. Help shows both, step by step.
How many can play?
It depends on the host's plan: up to 6 players on Free, 12 on Home, and 24 on Church & Team. See Pricing.
Do players need an account or pay anything?
No. Players never sign up and never pay: they join with the code. Only the host picks a plan, and there's a free one: the Upper Room Quiz, up to 6 players.
Can family in another home join?
Yes, on the Home and Church & Team plans. They open the game with your room code on their own laptop, or cast a Chrome tab to their TV, and play on their phones.
Something not working?
Help has the quick fixes: a phone that can't join, no sound, a screen that went to sleep.
Why we made this
We made Gather Upstairs for the nights that matter: families around the TV, youth groups after church, friends gathered in one room. Good fun first, with everyone playing.
Along the way you learn the Bible together, its people, places and words, one question at a time. And at the heart of it is the good news of Jesus Christ, the reason we gather at all.
